The region where Sarah lives is surrounded by a really nice landscape including: mountains, lakes, forest and land. It sounds like both Sarah and I live in a similar place of lovely scenery. About 50 years ago Meiningen, which is the city Sarah is living in, had a lot of farms but those farms have decreased in the last few years. Nowadays there are only 5 farms in the village. Sarah told me that one of those farms is her Uncle’s farm. The farm is ran organically and there they grow different kinds of vegetables and produce milk products. When Sarah was a child, she used to help at the farm because a lot of work has to be done by hand and it takes quite a lot of time. At the farm they also sell groceries in a little organic food shop and her Aunt also makes some cheese and butter on her own which she can make as they also have animals such as: cows, cattle, chicken and pigs.
Last year, they brought a new idea on the market. The Bio-Kiste, which is a box with different kinds of vegetables that is delivered to one’s house every week. In winter they just transport the boxes once a month. As Sarah grew up in a big family, most of her relatives would also help at the farm. Due to the nature of the farm, the family tries to take special care of the nature and animals.
In Meiningen about 10 minutes away from where Sarah lives, there is a really nice forest which is nice to go for a walk on a Sunday afternoon. When Sarah told me this I said to her that our likes and hobbies for Sunday afternoons are quite similar as myself and my family love to go for walks through the valley that I live beside too. Sarah’s hometown of Meiningen lies next to the river Rhein and about one year ago, they built a new hydropower station there. What is more, there is a nice lake called ‘Baggerloch’, which is about 5 minutes away by bike where Sarah likes to go swimming in summer.
In general, Austria is a country with an immense amount of mountains and that is the reason why it is extremely common to go skiing in Austria as the winters are pretty cold. Moreover, the paths on the mountains are suitable for hiking as well. Sarah really likes going skiing and hiking and appreciates that the nearest skiing area is about half an hour away by car. While I live in a small country area surrounded by mountains too, unfortunately our winters aren’t just so wintery to go skiing. Sarah told me that on the top of the mountains, people usually have a fantastic view over Vorarlberg which is the part of Austria where Sarah lives and it is possible to catch a glimpse of the lake of Constance sometimes.
